A Taste of Thailand – A Visit to Mekong II Thai Cuisine

We’re back!  Sorry for the long delay in our blog posts.  We are very excited to get back to writing about our experiences and sharing information with all of you.  So without further ado, we decided to talk a little bit about food.  Thai food that is.

Mekong II Thai Cuisine Restaurant

A couple of days ago, we decided to have a meeting, but not just a conference call listening to each others voices, a face to face.  What better way to have it, than over dinner?  We made a reservation at a quaint and cozy restaurant, called Mekong II Thai Cuisine, located in Honolulu.  Let’s just say, the meeting became entirely about the food.

As soon as we walked in, we were greeted by a very friendly staff that immediately helped us to our table.  A couple of us have been there before, so we knew that a mouth watering meal was in order.  Skimming through the menu, we found a few items that caught our attention, and within minutes, we had the evening’s meal in mind.

Bangkok Chicken Wings

Bangkok Chicken Wings

First up was our appetizer, the Bangkok Chicken Wings.  Oh are these the easiest wings to to eat because they’re boneless!  They’re stuffed with pork, mushrooms and more, and then lightly fried.  Best of all, the dipping sauce!  Some kind of peanut sauce they call sa-teh.  My mouth is watering right now as I type this.

Evil Jungle Prince with Beef

Evil Jungle Prince with Beef

Our entrees included your traditional Pad Thai (with pork), Panang Curry with Chicken, Ong Choi with Tofu, Thai sticky rice, and something called the Evil Jungle Prince with Beef.  Wondering what that is huh?  The Evil Jungle Prince is sauteed beef with fresh basil, spices, and fresh light coconut milk, served on a bed of chopped cabbage.  Don’t let the name scare you – there was nothing evil about this dish, only flavorful goodness….

Banana Lumpia with Ice Cream

After our stomachs were happy and full, we were all ready for that dreadful food coma.  Good thing we were saved by our server, who suggested dessert?  Okay, you all know that when you see a dessert you just have to try, you WILL make room for it.  The Banana Lumpia with Ice Cream was one of those must haves.  I’ll let the photo do the talking…

So there you have it, a business meeting turned into a taste of Thailand.  We hope that your mouths are watering and that you’ll rush to make a reservation there soon.

A Little Bit of Everything – Honolulu

With the holiday season in full swing, and with most of us hitting the Black Friday specials, mainly to buy yourself something, it’s time to now think about that special gift for that special someone.  One place where you may find that special gift is a store located on the corner of Cooke and Kapiolani, called “A Little Bit of Everything“.  This store has that “something different” and “something special” kind of feel; something you won’t get at Best Buy.

Check out this video for a preview.

Black Friday Shopping

Okay, so we all know what Black Friday is about, at least here in the United States.  It’s THE shopping event of the year and it takes place the day after Thanksgiving.  In fact at many stores around the country, the Black Friday events start a few hours after the stroke of midnight on 11-26!  That’s insane!

There is little information about the origins of Black Friday with regards to shopping.  All we know is that the term Black Friday has been associated with a stock market crash and even an accounting practice.  Whatever the speculation may be, I think it’s safe to say that we all know of it as the day in which millions of people can save tremendous amounts of money while shopping!

From your local convenient store to the great Amazon.com, Black Friday discounts and deals are plentiful and sometimes overwhelming.  For the first timer, it can be a nerve racking experience.  What if you woke up just a little too late that morning, drove down to your local Target or Best Buy, only to see a line a mile long just to get into the door?  Scary huh?  Chances are what you’re looking for, may not be available IF you’re even able to get in.

But don’t fret, there are many other places to look for that great discount.  You just have to keep your eyes and ears open.  The best advise I can give you is to know exactly what you want to buy, plan accordingly, and prepare to be patient.  Also, if you can purchase your items online, do it!  A lot of online retailers offer free shipping on their products, and if you order early enough, you may be able to receive them well in advance of the holidays.

So good luck, plan it well, and I think your Black Friday experience won’t be as bad as you think.  Remember one thing, isn’t the day after Christmas the second busiest shopping day of the year?

The QR Code – An Evolution in Digital Marketing

Imagine yourself walking into your favorite local deli, when suddenly, you remember that there was a coupon in the morning newspaper for a free cup of coffee with a purchase of a breakfast sandwich.  You get frustrated for forgetting the coupon, but then you notice that on the deli’s storefront window lies a small square shaped, barcode looking sticker.  You quickly reach into your pocket to grab your smart phone, activate its code reading application, and point its camera at the sticker.  Presto, you bring up the deli’s webpage with the coupon staring right at you!  You show it to the cashier and get your free cup of coffee.

This situation describes the benefit of a revolutionary marketing tool called a QR code, short for Quick Response.

The QR code originated in Japan back in the early 1990’s, where it was used to track automotive parts in a vehicle’s manufacturing process.  Over the years, people saw its potential, by being able to hold greater amounts of information than a simple barcode.  Today, QR codes are used in various industries, but its greatest influence has been in the marketing and advertising arena.

QR Code on a storefront window

The beauty of a QR code, besides its square shape and black and white design, is the ability able to hold large amounts of data.  It can be used to hold information such as text, phone numbers, and even website addresses.  Its popularity today has been because of the latter, where its code is generated to direct people to various websites and online content.

So how is it used in marketing and advertising?  Well companies know that people want quick and accessible information.  The situation in beginning of this post gave you an example of how a person can scan the QR code to bring up information that he or she can use at that moment.

The QR code is also relatively cheap to produce, which would provide a cost savings benefit for companies advertising their products or services.  There are many online websites than can create the QR code for free using a QR code generator.  One would simply provide the information such as a website address and the generator would create the image of the QR code, which can then be copied and saved for use on any advertising media such as magazines, business cards, etc.

Over the next few years, we will all see a revolution in digital marketing and advertising.  The QR code will make its way through America, just like it has throughout Japan.  You’ll see it in more magazines, stores, and other establishments where marketing and providing information is required.  So get your smart phones ready with the latest scanning program because you don’t want to miss out on a coupon for a free cup of coffee…

Hawaii Deals – To get a Discount or Great Deal, Just Ask

Do you ever ask for a discount or deal when shopping?  Unfortunately many people don’t ask and take the listed price as non-negotiable.  To get a great deal or discount, sometimes you just have to ask.  So what are some tips on getting deals:

1.  Don’t be afraid to ask

Some people are afraid of rejection, but try to think about what’s the worse thing that could happen if you find the courage to ask.  They could say ”no”, but then you are at the same place where you were before you asked.  There, no harm done.  There is a way to ask, and if you are considerate or polite, that will probably get you better results.  Especially when you are asking for the discount.

2.  Explain your situation or tell a story

Your specific situation sometimes will warrant you a discount.  I recall shopping for a koa jewelry box and seeing one that looked like the one my wife would really like.  I explained that it was my 5th wedding anniversary and that I’ve been looking for the perfect anniversary gift.  After spending time explaining the situation the sales person sensed that the price was just a bit too expensive, the sales person gave me a discount of 15% off.  The next step was to ask for a discount, but it came before I had the chase.  Even better.

3.  Inquire if a sale is coming up

Sales people, especially ones that work off of a commission tyically want a sale now versus later.  A good thing to ask is if a sale is coming up soon.  Stores typically don’t always advertise a sale that’s coming up a few weeks down the road.  Sometimes doing this will get the retailer a good reputation for being “customer oriented”.  This type of advertising we all know helps both the consumer and retailer.

4.  Be a frequent shopper and build trust, then ask if they offer discounts

Sometimes just being a frequent shopper can warrant you discounts or you get free stuff.  Nothing beats repeat business, so when a merchant recognizes you, this is a great opportunity to ask for a discount.  Your loyalty and showing of gratitude may get you a discount or free stuff the next time you shop.

If given a discount, reciprocate with a compliment or offer to tell others about the store or retailer.

A Financial Plan in Hawaii – Why You Need One, Part 2

Last week we started the conversation on why a financial plan makes sense.  As they say “He who fails to plan, plans to fail.”  This week we will take a look at the process of setting up a financial plan, and more importantly, how to stay on track once a plan is put in place.  Any plan is only worth something if action is taken to execute the plan.

The financial planning process
Creating and implementing a comprehensive financial plan generally involves working with financial professionals to:

  • Develop a clear picture of your current financial situation by reviewing your income, assets, and liabilities, and evaluating your insurance coverage, your investment portfolio, your tax exposure, and your estate plan
  • Establish and prioritize financial goals and time frames for achieving these goals
  • Implement strategies that address your current financial weaknesses and build on your financial strengths
  • Choose specific products and services that are tailored to meet your financial objectives.
  • Monitor your plan, making adjustments as your goals, time frames, or circumstances change

Some members of the team
The financial planning process can involve a number of professionals.
Financial planners typically play a central role in the process, focusing on your overall financial plan, and often coordinating the activities of other professionals who have expertise in specific areas. Accountants or tax attorneys provide advice on federal and state tax issues.  Estate planning attorneys help you plan your estate and give advice on transferring and managing your assets before and after your death. Insurance professionals evaluate insurance needs and recommend appropriate products and strategies. Investment advisors provide advice about investment options and asset allocation, and can help you plan a strategy to manage your investment portfolio.  The most important member of the team, however, is you.  Your needs and objectives drive the team, and once you’ve carefully considered any recommendations, all decisions lie in your hands.

Why can’t I do it myself?
You can, if you have enough time and knowledge, but developing a comprehensive financial plan may require expertise in several areas.  According to Bobby Ho, Financial Planner with Ameriprise Financial here in Honolulu, “A financial professional can give you objective information and help you weigh your alternatives, saving you time and ensuring that all angles of your financial picture are covered”.

Staying on track
The financial planning process doesn’t end once your initial plan has been created.  Your plan should generally be reviewed at least once a year to make sure that it’s up-to-date.  It’s also possible that you’ll need to modify your plan due to changes in your personal circumstances or the economy.  Here are some of the events that might trigger a review of your financial plan:

  • Your goals or time horizons change
  • You experience a life-changing event such as marriage, the birth of a child, health problems, or a job loss
  • You have a specific or immediate financial planning need (e.g., drafting a will, managing a distribution from a retirement account, paying long-term care expenses)
  • Your income or expenses substantially increase or decrease
  • Your portfolio hasn’t performed as expected
  • You’re affected by changes to the economy or tax laws

Peace of Mind
A financial plan also gives you the peace of mind that things will be taken care of when the unexpected happens.  You might get laid off your job, or maybe get hurt and can’t work.  Even if these unfortunate events happen, you will still be able to take care of your family financially, which can reduce the stress of the situation.

A Financial Plan in Hawaii – Why You Need One, Part 1

One of the goals of 808 Deals is to inform our Hawaii readers. Although our website will be featuring local deals offered by Hawai’i businesses, we also want to go a little further and blog about the industries and subjects that our clients fall into. We by no means are experts in any of these topics, but it is very interesting when we talk to different businesses and learn about what they do and why they feel their products or services are significant.

This week, we are taking a look at financial planning. Wait, don’t turn away just yet, this maybe something that might really be worth considering. Try asking yourself the following questions. Do you picture yourself owning a new home? Starting a new business? Retiring comfortably? How about having a family trip every year? These are a few goals that may be important to you. To acheive these goals, one must understand that it comes with a price tag attached. That’s where financial planning comes in. Financial planning is a process that can help you reach your goals by evaluating your whole financial picture, then outlining strategies that are tailored to your individual needs and available resources.

Ameriprise Financial Planner, Bobby Ho, gave us some reasons why getting a financial plan is so important. Bobby, explained that a comprehensive financial plan serves as a framework for organizing the pieces of your financial picture. With a financial plan in place, you’ll be better able to focus on your goals and understand what it will take to reach them. One of the main benefits of having a financial plan is that it can help you balance your competing financial priorities.

A financial plan will clearly show you how your financial goals are related–for example, how saving for your children’s college education might impact your ability to save for retirement. You can use the information you’ve gleaned to decide how to prioritize your goals, implement specific strategies, and choose suitable investment products or services. Best of all, you’ll have the peace of mind that comes from knowing that your financial life is on track. Now try asking yourself if you have the skill set and knowledge to put together a comprehensive financial plan together. Unless you are a financial planner, probably not. Not that you aren’t smart enough to put one together, but most of us don’t have enough time between work, family and leisure time. Most people would rather spend their free time doing something other than putting together a financial plan.

Having a financial planner makes a lot of sense when you get married, according to Bobby Ho. “A financial professional can give you objective unbiased information and help you weigh your options as a new couple”. Bobby also added that throughout your financial planning relationship with an advisor, they can offer solutions that address your cash management, investment, insurance protection and other financial needs. The recommendations will include information to help you understand your choices and steps you can take to put your financial plan into action. Next week will cover the process of setting up a financial plan, and how to stay on track once you make the decision to create a plan.

Star Event Staff – Hawaii’s Premier Staffing and Event Marketing Agency

Star Event Staff Honolulu

Charmaine, Alex, and Tiffany

Tucked away in a corner office above Jimbo Restaurant on King St., you would never think there lies a powerhouse of a company that employees over 5000 people around the country.

We had the opportunity of meeting with Star Event Staff owner, Charmaine Williams and her Oahu executives, Tiffany Scheffer and Alex Propios, at their Honolulu office.  My business partner and I were thinking that our visit would include a few photos of the office, staff, and a brief meet and greet with Charmaine.  However, to our luck and pleasure, we also got to witness, firsthand, a quick demonstration of their superb talent and had a chance to sit down with Charmaine, Tiffany, and Alex to really get to understand how Star Events Staff started and blossomed.

Star Event Staff

Charmaine first started as a promotional model back in Arizona, where she quickly learned that her work could be a lucrative business opportunity.  So in 2004, she created Star Event Staff and by 2010, she had offices in New York, California, Nevada, Arizona, and here in Hawaii.  I think by normal business standards, to grow that fast is truly exceptional!

But why Hawaii, compared to other large states?  Well, like any smart business person, Charmaine saw Hawaii as a perfect market for her company’s services, which provides staffing and event marketing.  If someone needed to market their brand of beverage at a local grocery store, they would call Star Event Staff to provide the people to do so.  If a company needed someone to plan a major promotional event at Aloha Stadium, they would call Star Event Staff.   From what my partner and I learned that day, we believe Charmaine’s company could handle any size event.

Here at our visit, models Pamela Johnson, Vince McKinney, and Patricia McConnell were on hand to talk about their services as well as show us how they promote the company.  We were pretty impressed to say the least, especially since they performed it without any rehearsal!   Check out the video!

Ultimately, Charmaine would like to see the company expand to all 50 states.  I think they have the ability to expand globally.  In the six years they’ve been around, they have accomplished more than most companies do in a lifetime.  Just wait and see, Charmaine and her Star Event Staff will be coming to a city near you.

So if your company is looking for someone to help you promote your brand or product, please contact Charmaine at Star Event Staff.  You can also check them out on our 808 Deals website for more information and a discount!
